Dedicated to the memory of Mary

This site is a permanent tribute to our wonderful mum, who was born in Irvine (Scotland) to Eileen and James Smith (both from Cavan) on 27 July, 1945.  The family returned to Ireland in 1950 and settled in Kilnavarra, Cavan.  Mary was the eldest of seven - Eileen (Galway), Terry (London), twins Hugh (Meath) and Sean (London), Noel (Dublin) and Kate (New York). Mary attended the St Clare's National and Secondary Schools, and achieved her Leaving Cert at 17.

She then went to Manchester where she completed her A'levels, before training as a teacher in Liverpool.  She began her first teaching job in 1967 in St Peters Junior School (Halewood).  During her career she went on to teach in a number of schools across Merseyside, including Holy Rosary (Aintree) and made lifelong friends along the way.

Mary married John in 1970.  They bought a house in Gateacre where they lived for a couple of years, before moving to Liverpool Road North in Maghull. She had two daughters - Colette was born in 1975, and five years later Pauline arrived. They both attended St John Bosco Primary School and then Maricourt High School, before going on to graduate from university.

St Gregory the Great Parish Church has always been an important part of Mary's life.  She was a regular reader and Eucharistic Minister, active member of the Union of Catholic Mothers, and enjoyed helping with the flowers.  She was involved in a number of different prayer groups, including the Schoenstatt Movement, and went on several pilgrimages across Europe.

Mum was always drawn to people, and had an absolute gift for connecting with everyone she met.  She had an incredible sense of fun and got real joy from life. She loved going to the theatre and cinema, a passion which she passed on to both of us.

However we like to think that she was happiest of all when we were spending time altogether - as you can hopefully see from some of the photos on this page ... We would love you to add any photos, thoughts or memories you would like to share, now or in the future x

Thoughts

When you live in the hearts of those you love, Remember then you never die. Farewell My Friends It was beautiful As long as it lasted The journey of my life. I have no regrets Whatsoever said The pain I’ll leave behind. Those dear hearts Who love and care... And the strings pulling At the heart and soul... The strong arms That held me up When my own strength Let me down. At the turning of my life I came across Good friends, Friends who stood by me Even when time raced me by. Farewell, farewell My friends I smile and Bid you goodbye. No, shed no tears For I need them not All I need is your smile. If you feel sad Do think of me For that’s what I’ll like When you live in the hearts Of those you love Remember then You never die. Farewell My Friends by Rabindranath Tagore
Pauline and Colette

Mary has been a friend for 30 years. I shall always remember her kindness to me when I first met her while teaching in Holy Rosary Primary School. Mary was always there at the end of the school day ready with cups of tea and a friendly chat. We kept in touch over the years and enjoyed many pleasant times together, some of which involved Irish music and dancing which she loved. I have so many lovely memories of Mary, the sparkle in her eyes when she laughed, her many exclamations about "the weather" and her great kindness-to name but a few. I also admired her devotion to her faith and all that she did for her parish. Mary spoke often of her girls, Colette and Pauline and she was proud of all their achievements. It was obvious too that she was very close to all her brothers and sisters because her love for them was apparent in her conversations about gatherings for birthdays and weddings etc. I send my prayers to Colette and Pauline and to all Mary's family at this sad time. She must have been a wonderful mother and sister because she was a truly wonderful friend. Eileen Smith-Liverpool
